Very Merry 10th Day of Christmas

Merry 10th Day of Christmas!

Today I shared the joy of the season with a dear friend I have not seen in quite a while. I have a few people who are friends that feel like family and this friend is one of those! You know the ones… you may not see one another for a long time but when you do get together it is like time and space are not there. You pick up your conversations easily and laughter comes quickly.

Our friendship is extra special for several reasons. During times of struggles she has been there for me and my family, particularly during the illnesses and subsequent deaths of my great aunt, my parents and in-laws. We have shared many crazy times with our sons. We even took some computer classes together. One of the most special memories I have with her is when she asked me to be her sponsor as she prepared to be welcomed into the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil in 2014 (also on my birthday! 😊 ).

I thought about all of this as I worked on this post about the 10th Day of Christmas and how the ten lords a-leaping represent the Ten Commandments. It’s amusing to think of ten guys dancing and leaping about but when I consider a deeper and more spiritual meaning, I make a connection between that and my relationship with my dear friend.

I was touched and honored when she chose me to help her make the “joyful leap” into our faith. And isn’t that what we strive to do when we consider the Ten Commandments? Living by their guidelines – along with others, such as the Beatitudes – is a way to bring ourselves closer to Jesus Christ.

The Ten Commandments

  1. I am the Lord thy God; thou shalt not have strange gods before me.
  2. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.
  3. Remember that thou keep holy the Sabbath day.
  4. Honor thy father and mother.
  5. Thou shalt not kill.
  6. Thou shalt not commit adultery.
  7. Thou shalt not steal.
  8. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
  9. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s wife.
  10. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s goods.

The final days of the Christmas season are here. I hope your heart will be as light and carefree as one of the leaping lords and that you will continue to share the joy of the season with those around you.

Merry Christmas,
Karen
