Epiphany – Manifestation to Mission
Epiphany: Feast of the Manifestation
Today is the Epiphany, the Feast of the Manifestation, which recalls when the Magi followed the star to Bethlehem to worship the newborn king. With the Epiphany, the Christ child is revealed to the entire world!
All day, every time I sat down to write about the Epiphany, something interrupted me. Somehow, though, the song “We Are the Light of the World” kept playing in my head since I woke up this morning.
I’m not sure why this song stayed in my brain today but as the day went on, I thought perhaps it was a good fit for the Epiphany. The first verse and refrain are:
Blessed are they who are poor in spirit theirs is the kingdom of God.
Bless us O Lord make us poor in spirit bless us O Lord my God.
We are the light of the world, may our light shine before all.
That they may see the good that we do and give glory to God.
The Epiphany celebrates the light of Christ coming to us. The song, We Are the Light of the World, celebrates that same light of Christ shining through us to all of those we encounter. The song is The Beatitudes, which show us how to care for others, to bring others Christ’s light through our actions.
We are the Light
The Epiphany did not end in Bethlehem with the visit of the three kings. The work was just beginning! Now it is our turn to carry that light to others.
The Magi followed the star to Bethlehem to find baby Jesus. Today, wise people still seek Him. If your life, your light, was the only ‘star’ someone saw this week, would it lead them to Bethlehem, or would they still be in the dark?
Lord Jesus, as you revealed yourself to the Magi who followed the star to Bethlehem, lead our hearts to you and reveal yourself in our lives anew every day so we may reflect your light to the world through our prayers and actions. Amen.
Happy Epiphany!
