November Thankful Challenge Day 13

texting_cat__animated__by_waad11-d55el6hToday, on November 13, I am thankful for texting. My use of texting has evolved over the years. It began when our oldest son started taking classes at the local college. Since he was only 14, I had to drive him and pick him up. There were only 2 or 3 public phones on campus so my husband and I decided to get him a cell phone so he could use it to text us when he was ready to be picked up or I could text him to let him know what time I would pick him up (inevitably to tell him I would be late).

texting improves literacy

My kids do, for the most part, use complete sentences, proper grammar and correct spelling when they write text messages to me.

Fast forward a few years and we found other uses for texting, particularly when all family members were actually at home.

Kids music too loud upstairs while we are downstairs watching a movie? No problem, shoot them a text to turn it down.

Husband working in the garage and it is pouring rain and I don’t want to go outside? No biggie, text him that dinner is ready.

In the last couple of years, even my now-80-year-old mother will send a text to me and other family members.

I better go see what my husband just texted to me. Probably wants to know what we’re having for dinner tonight!

What are you thankful for today?

~Karen
